What’s in a name?

Prior to HBO’s greenlighting the pilot, I wondered that if the series did get produced what HBO would go with as the title of the series? A Song of Ice and Fire just seemed too long and unwieldy for a television series. Well with the recent news of the pilot going to production, it seems that a title was chosen as well. James Hibberd, senior reporter for The Hollywood Reporter, writes on his blog:

HBO has given a pilot order to fantasy project “Game of Thrones.”

The program is based on George R.R. Martin’s bestselling series of novels “A Song of Fire & Ice” and executive produced by David Benioff (“Troy”), D.B. Weiss (“Halo”) and Guymon Casady (“Hope & Faith”). The title “Game of Thrones” is from the first novel in the series.

Winter Is Coming: As I figured, they decided to go with a title that is a little more succinct. Game of Thrones is a good overall title as I think it fits the theme of the series quite nicely. It is also less confusing and easier to remember. As we can see from the above quote, A Song of Ice and Fire is a title that tends to leave people a little tongue tied.
