Success of ‘Merlin’ and ‘Legend of the Seeker’ good for ‘Thrones’?
Variety is reporting that BBC’s Merlin has been picked up for a second season after word that it has been acquired by 112 territories. NBC has already acquired the US broadcast rights for the series.
In related news, Disney’s syndicated series Legend of the Seeker has proven to be a success. The series has acquired more than 3.6 million viewers during its first month on air.
Winter Is Coming: I know what you are thinking. “If Game of Thrones is anything at all like Merlin or Legend of the Seeker, I will cry!” I am with you on that. My hope though is that HBO looks at the success of these other, admittedly less expensive, fantasy series’ and figures that Thrones would be a profitable venture. It seems like the perfect time to take the typical fantasy stereotypes and completely turn them on their head. A Song of Ice and Fire certainly does that and HBO certainly has a reputation for being edgy, so it should be a good fit. People tuning in will know immediately that this may be fantasy, but it is still HBO.
