What if HBO doesn’t pick up the series?
Like I said in my last entry, after reading the script, I think HBO would be crazy not to pick this up. But there are always extenuating circumstances. Let’s say everyone’s worst fears are realized and HBO declines to pick up the series. What then?
Normally HBO does not release to the public pilots that they have passed on. So that would mean the only people who would get to see the finished product would be the producers and HBO executives. Which would be a shame. There are so many fans of this series that are dying to see any part of ASOIAF on screen, I’m sure even if the series wasn’t going to be made many people would want to see the pilot. Maybe HBO would throw us a bone in this case? I have to imagine that most of their pilots don’t have the interest level that this one has, so you never know.
The more likely scenario is that someone with access to the final cut of the pilot leaks it. This is surprisingly quite common, especially for adaptations and other projects with a built-in fan base. For example, HBO’s own True Blood had its pilot episode leaked. Granted this was after the series had already been picked up, but it does happen.
All that being said, let us hope that we don’t have to resort to either of these options and that we get to see at least one full season of Game of Thrones.
