Getting to know you

A while back one of my readers had asked about getting to know a little more about the guy behind Winter Is Coming. We’ve added two more writers since then, so this post will have a little bit on all three of us.

Also I thought this would be a good opportunity for all of us to talk a little bit about ourselves. We have a pretty good community of posters around here and it will be cool to learn a little more about everyone. So here is what the three of us have to say about ourselves, feel free to share your story in the comments below and use this thread to talk about anything non-Thrones related.

Hear Me Roar: Hear Me Roar is a PhD researcher in linguistics currently residing in the lowlands of Europe. His origins can be traced to the sunny side of the Alps, a place he maintains strong ties with despite living abroad. HmR first heard about George R.R. Martin’s series in college when the third book had been written, and started reading it soon after. The news of HBO’s optioning the rights in early 2007 found him on the Wall (its European counterpart, that is) where he spent half a year on a scholarship. He was excited to learn Winter is Coming started a blog on the upcoming TV series in November 2008 and began following it closely when GRRM gave it a shout-out three weeks later. Hear Me Roar is glad to have been a part of the WiC community since the early days, and proud to be able to actively contribute to the blog as its European time zone correspondent.

Fire And Blood: Fire and Blood (FaBio to his friends) was born deep in the Jersey swamps, but unlike some had enough sense to escape. He has a body of employment that includes dog-walking, lawn-mowing, private investigating, freelance writing, script reading, coffee-fetching, cold-calling, and a stint in the United States Air Force which included even more dog-walking and an “interesting” encounter with a three-toed sloth. He was also once paid to be a dungeon master and readily adds that to his résumé. He has lived in more places than your mother would approve, is a serial monogamist, pro-death advocate, Rush fan, and ASoIaF enthusiast. He currently lives in southern California and says “Dude” preceding any statement he sees as even moderately important. He likes to brag that he holds a 4.0 with the University of Maryland on the strength of three creative writing courses (he has since refused to take any subsequent classes for fear of marring this very interesting conversation-starter). He is alternately known across the internets as Axechucker, About Yea High, and Tobias J. McGuffin. He considers World of Warcraft a disease, not a cure.

Winter Is Coming: Winter Is Coming was born and raised in New Jersey, the non-toxic portion. After graduating from Rutgers University, he moved to LA with dreams of making it in the film industry. Like so many others, he ended up moving back home a little poorer and with no career to show for it. He did start this site though! Which turned out to be his “big break” as he was able to turn his work on this site into a new career. He now holds a day job as a graphic/web designer. Father of two, husband of one, he spends much of his free time working on this site, playing with his kids, watching Friends or Seinfeld with his wife, and rooting for all five of Philadelphia’s sports teams.
