Day 138: Filming winding down

Filming for the first season of Game Of Thrones is nearing an end. The final day of scheduled filming is Dec. 18. With less than two weeks to go, the final scenes are being shot now.

Last week, we had reports of filming at Audley’s Castle. Well, after many days and nights of filming there, it seems the filming is at an end. This morning they began taking down the campsite set erected by the castle on the shores of Strangford Lough.

Similarly, it seemed that filming at Castle Ward had also concluded as recent visitors to the location had indicated that much of the filming equipment was gone. This conclusion was further backed up by a tweet from Kristian Nairn (Hodor) who indicated he had finished filming his scenes. However, it seems there is yet some scenes left to shoot there as extras were recently called to the location for more filming. Whether this was the original plan or not, I don’t know.

It is possible what they are doing is filming pick-ups. If they are filming pick-ups at this point, that would seem to indicate that they are on, or ahead of, schedule. Good to hear as I was worried the snow and general bad weather in Northern Ireland may have caused some delays. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.

At this point, it seems likely that many of the characters we still have yet to see (Tywin, Shae, Shagga, etc.) would be filming now, or just recently finished. Hopefully that means in a few weeks time we will get some stills, or even video, of these characters.

UPDATE (12/8/10): Our source indicates that the filming at Castle Ward is not being done on the Winterfell set. They have redressed the location and are now using it as Tywin’s campsite. Yesterday, they filmed Tyrion’s arrival to camp and the presentation of the mountain clans to Tywin. The fact that they’re using Castle Ward for Tyrion’s arrival and not Redhall Estates seems to indicate a change in location from the book. If you recall, Tywin was located at the Crossroads Inn when Tyrion first encounters him and Redhall Estates was the location used to film other inn scenes.

It seems likely they may have compressed these scenes and have just had Tyrion’s first encounter with Tywin happen at the battle camp, not the Crossroads Inn. If that is the case we can assume the rest of the scenes that take place at the battle camp will be filmed today. Possibilities include Tywin battle planning with his officers, the post-battle meeting between Tywin and Tyrion or, maybe even Shae’s first “encounter” with Tyrion.
