Episode 4 – Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things – New Viewer Recap

Episode four of Game of Thrones has just aired. So what did you new viewers think? I noticed a lot of backstory and references to lore that book fans would appreciate. But I think there was a lot for new viewers also with some humorous moments and some great dramatic scenes as well. And that ending has to leave you wondering what will happen next (no looking at Wikipedia!). Our newbie recapper We Do Not Sow with his thoughts after the break.

Spoiler note: This post is intended for new viewers only (book fans can discuss the show here). We ask all the series veterans to refrain from posting spoilers in the comments here, veiled or otherwise. This show is best viewed without knowing all the surprises beforehand, so please be respectful of your new, fellow fans. Thank you!

We Do Not Sow: What a great ending on tonight’s episode.  As if there wasn’t enough bad blood between the Lannister‘s and Stark’s, I think Catelyn might have just thrown fuel on the fire.  I can not image the repercussions that will follow Tyrion being taken into custody by Catelyn.  Although, I do not think that Tyrion was behind the attack on Bran but I do believe it could of well been thought out by Jaime and Cersei, only time will tell.

So we got some background on the Greyjoy’s tonight, which after aligning myself with them, was saddened to hear about the rebellion but also sparked more interest in learning more and the reasons behind the rebellion.  It’s amazing week after week they give you just enough that you feel you know more history of the families or they show you more of the depth of a character but they only give you enough so that every Sunday I am hanging on every word.

I haven’t made up my mind on Littlefinger yet, he has told Ned and Catelyn he will help them out as much as possible but he seems very shady to me.  He even tells Ned in this episode to not trust him.  I’m torn between between Littlefinger being an ally to the Starks and helping them while they are in King’s landing or being a “double agent” and playing all sides.

Since the first episode, I have not been surprised yet by the Targaryen storyline but something big is coming.  It could be that Viserys gets so frustrated will he confront Drogo?  Daenerys is becoming a stronger character and I think all the new viewers  kind of expected that but its going to make for an interesting storyline from here on out.

On a side note we got to see some more dire wolf action tonight, Jon Snows runt of the litter is used to scare off the recruits. We also find out, next time you’re in Winterfell you must stop in and meet Roz the red head and King Robert’s bastard son is a pretty kickass blacksmith.  I can’t wait to see what is beyond the Wall!  I also can’t wait for more history of Jon Snow’s mother, more info on the war that gave King Robert the throne and I can’t wait for more Arya. I think it’s awesome she wants to buck the trend and live the life of a knight rather than of a lord’s wife.

So we are going to try something new this week, I want everyone new to the series and watching it week by week with me, to give me your favorite scene so far in the first 4 episodes and tell us which character at this point you identify with the most.

So I will start – My favorite scene might be the attempted murder of Bran, when Catelyn turns around to see man with a knife it gave me chills.  My favorite character might just be Tyrion, he is such a smart ass and actually is most honest and just tells it like it is.  I do find myself rooting for Jon Snow and hope there is a lot more of him and whatever else lies behind the Wall.
