Game of Thrones Season 4 premieres in Paris

This week, Game of Thrones Season 4 premiered in Paris, France at Le Grand Rex. Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, and Liam Cunningham were on hand to celebrate the occasion. The event treated fans to an early screening of Two Swords as well as a Q&A with the cast.

BFM TV spoke with the cast on the red carpet about what we can expect from Season 4, and tried to get the scoop on which characters won’t survive, to no avail.

The entire Q&A with the cast inside of the theatre was captured on video. The cast discuss the popularity of the show, fan encounters, the nature of deaths on Game of Thrones, what’s to come in Season 4, their favourite memories from the show, and answer questions from the fans.

A few hours before the big premiere, Sophie and Maisie sat down for some roundtable interviews. The pair spoke with Le Point and L’Express about their character’s evolution in Season 4, if they’re afraid their characters will die, the relationship between Sansa and Tyrion, and more.

LePoint.fr: Your characters change a lot in this fourth season: Arya is a little less sure of herself, while Sansa is the opposite.

Sophie Turner: Yes, this season, she becomes very, very interesting, an unexpected force to be reckoned with. I think people should pay more attention to her. Indeed, they underestimate her lot.

Maisie Williams: They forget that she sits at the forefront of various influences of the greatest minds in the kingdom.

Sophie: It’s been three years that she’s lived in King’s Landing and has learnt a lot, people don’t even realize they give her so much information. So far, they have not noticed that she takes part, too, in the game, but she doesn’t let it show. If she had shown a moment she understood what was at stake, she would already be dead. But this season, she has the opportunity to prove that she has learned a lot.

Maisie: As for Arya, she begins to lose sight of the person she was, the person that her father would have wanted it to be. This is her weakness in this new season, she is able to do many things, but she is not sure what to do, what is right or wrong. And that’s what is great in Game of Thrones, you can never tell if a character is good or bad.

L’express.fr: Do not you live in fear that your character dies?

Maisie: Oh yes! Especially since we know that the book and the TV adaptation, the chronology of events can sometimes change. We’re still feverish when we receive the scripts, you never know what can happen to us!

Sophie: We are both very close to our characters and if they died, it would be devastating for us. We grew up with them for four years, a part of me would die if Sansa disappeared.

How is the relationship between Tyrion and Sansa, now husband and wife, will it change in Season 4?

Sophie: There is a fairly strong relationship between them that is not love, nor anything of that kind, but rather a mutual understanding that will strengthen this season. The problem is that he’s a Lannister, his family killed Sansa’s father, brother and mother. But she knows that Tyrion is part of the ‘good guys’ and that she can trust him. He will do his utmost to protect her the best he can with the power he holds. I really like their relationship.

How did you feel about filming the famous Red Wedding episode?

Maisie: It was great! The shooting was very realistic. I remember when I was riding, and I discovered the body of Robb with the head of the giant wolf stitched in place of his own! Everyone was fighting all around me, even if it was not ‘real’ fighting, people laying on the floor, it was raining , there was mud everywhere, horses, chickens, I was surrounded by screams, blood splatter, it seemed really real! As an actress, I love these big epic scenes, even if what was happening was not really nice for my character!

Only 3 days to go and the excitement continues, as Sophie, Maisie, and Liam premiere Season 4 in Milan, Italy tonight.
