Michelle MacLaren on moving past the books, and tonight’s new episode
The final moments of last week’s Game of Thrones took us to a place we had never seen, or even read about, before. The revelation of what the White Walkers have been doing with Craster’s sons came as a welcome shock to everyone, including Director Michelle MacLaren.
In a brief new interview with The Hollywood Reporter MacLaren says, “I was so blown away to find out what they are doing with the babies. I thought ‘Wow.’ I was very excited to do that. I had thought they ate the babies – isn’t that horrible?”
Although we got one big answer, the final scene presented a lot of questions as well. MacLaren says that showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss were very particular about how little they wanted to show, leaving the line-up blurred out on purpose. She also teases that she is excited to see where they will take things, as the show is starting to move beyond the books “more and more.”
MacLaren also directed tonight’s new episode, which contains a scene shot in “the deepest mud” she’s ever seen, and that a particular actor has become so adept with a sword that his stunt double didn’t get to see any action during a key sword fighting sequence.
