Aidan Gillen talks Littlefinger getting his hands dirty, and a surprisingly clever Sansa Stark
Littlefinger’s relationship with Sansa Stark took a turn in Sunday’s episode from paternal to darn creepy, as he kissed the daughter of his true love, Catelyn, while Lysa looked on. Filled with rage, Lysa threatened to send Sansa out the Moon Door, but it was Lysa who would take flight at the hand of her own husband.
This isn’t the first time Littlefinger has been responsible for someone’s death, but it is the first time he’s gotten his hands dirty, and it served a very important purpose: to tie Sansa closer to him.
In a new interview with TV Guide, Aidan Gillen explains, “I guess the closest we got was when he pulled the dagger on Ned Stark (Sean Bean) in Season 1. What was it about this one? It was just an inspired moment. There’s also something else there though. It ties Sansa closer to him. She’s there and she is a witness and she also has partaken in this in a way… They’ve got a secret.”
Littlefinger truly loved Catelyn Stark, and some of those caring feelings have been transferred over to her daughter, but Aidan says that his interests in her are also politically self-serving. But now, the same can be said for Sansa, who is quickly changing and learning how to play the game.
“I think Sansa views him as a political pawn too. Or she’s probably not thinking politically, but she’s playing him. She’s becoming something, she’s changing. And I think it wouldn’t be beyond her to be playing me… It’s quite interesting to see someone else get clever like that. I think she can be surprising.”
Looking ahead, Aidan describes what role Littlefinger will take towards Sansa and his new step-son Robyn Arryn.
“I think kind of a mentor. I think we’re also going to see that with Lysa’s son Robin as well. These two young people need some guidance, and I do put myself in that position.”
He adds “He’s one of the smartest guys in the land. His plans are very well laid, and he sees way further ahead than a lot of other characters.”
