Pedro Pascal on Oberyn Martell, taking his robe home, and preparing to fight The Mountain
Yesterday, Pedro Pascal participated in a live Q&A with HBO Connect. Pedro answered a number of fan questions about his portrayal of Oberyn Martell this season on Game of Thrones.
In some of the best question and answers below he says that his favorite part of playing Oberyn has been his unpredictability, admits that he can be caught walking around his apartment in his Dornish robe, and reveals just how Oberyn prepares to fight The Mountain.
GameOfThrones: Thank you for joining us today Pedro! What’s your favorite part about playing Oberyn Martell?
It’s the best character I’ve ever played and I’m no spring chicken. That’s a testament to how great of a character Oberyn it is. It starts with the brilliant character GRRM created in the books and David Benioff and Dan Weiss in their adaptation to make him a supreme badass on so many levels. Of all of his strengths, I find his unpredictability the most exciting. He has a short fuse and can go off in any moment, but can surprise you by writing poetry and aligning himself with the underdog.
ChelseaFC_Talk: What do you think of the clothes you wear on the show, and will you ever wear them in public?
Oberyn’s outfits are the greatest I put on. My first “pinch me” moment was when I went for a fitting. When I met Michelle Clapton, the costume designer, she put a mock robe on me fitted to my measurements and it was like putting the skin of the character onto my body. I took my mock robe home and I walk around my apartment with it on sometimes.
Ammar Abbas: Which Game of Thrones character (Other than Oberyn) do you think has a similar personality to you?
I would say Daario Naharis is a real lover and a fighter. He has an appetite for extremes like Oberyn Martell. He has an eye on one lady, but he’s similar to Oberyn Martell in ways that he partakes in other pleasures. I’m not sure if Daenerys would partake. And then there’s Tyrion, they would have been pals.
IAmZamann: How does Oberyn prepare to fight someone as large as the mountain?
I think just a lifetime of cleanly shaped hatred and some wine.
