David Benioff and Dan Weiss promise “The Children” will be Game of Thrones’ finest hour
As expected, episode 9 of this Game of Thrones season blew us all away, with the Battle of Castle Black living up to its brutal expectations. Now episode 10 approaches, and although it is usually reserved for the falling action of what we’ve just witnessed, this year we’ve been promised a grand finale.
In a joint statement to Entertainment Weekly, David Benioff and Dan Weiss say that “The Children” is going to be the finest hour of Game of Thrones yet. “It’s the best finale we’ve ever done, bar none. The performances from our cast, the direction from Alex Graves, the VFX work, the new [music] cues from Ramin Djawadi—all of it came together in perhaps the finest hour we’ve produced. We’re immensely proud of ‘The Children.’ And a little intimidated by the episode, because now we have to get back to the business of season five and figure out a way to top it.”
Add this to what we heard from Director Alex Graves earlier this year in an interview with Collider: “There’s a battle in the tenth episode that is so VFX heavy and so complex, even on a feature level, that won’t be done until June right before it airs.”
As well as a season finale tease from Sophie Turner via Just Jared: “The end is spectacular…it takes the storyline to a whole new level of a particular storyline. And you’re like “WOW.” It’s a hopeful turn. It’s dramatic but it’s like, for once Game of Thrones isn’t so depressing.”
Without a doubt the finale is going to be packed, with a broken Jon Snow heading to treat with Mance Rayder, Tyrion’s fate hanging in the balance, Arya’s next move, the promise of dragons, the return of Bran and company, and the certainty of a few surprises. Thankfully “The Children” has an extended runtime of 66 minutes, and we’ll be glued to the screen for every single one of them.
