Curtain Call: Aimee Richardson

Some of us had a feeling it was coming, others wished it wouldn’t, and now it’s become reality. Our sweet Aimee Richardson will no longer portray the role of Myrcella Baratheon in Game of Thrones. We can now all say that we share something in common with Cersei Lannister, as the last time we will have seen our familiar Myrcella, was when she sailed away to Dorne.

From the first moment the summer child arrived at Winterfell in Winter is Coming, to the moment she was sent off to an unknown land, Aimee Richardson captured the sweet, gentle, and innocent character of Myrcella Baratheon.

We first experienced that innocence at breakfast after Bran was injured from his fall, as Myrcella was direly concerned about the poor young Stark, and again when she witnessed Ser Hugh slain at the Tourney of the Hand.

We admired Aimee’s ability to portray a politically naive young girl during a dinner with her mother Cersei, and potential new sister, Sansa Stark. Sansa and Cersei were visibly tense when Myrcella inquisitively chimed in about the impending Royal Wedding. She was eager for the nuptials to occur so that she could wear her two dresses, showing a young girl intent on becoming more like the ladies she admired. Aimee was able to depict her character’s progression, and bring to the princess to life, which for a young actor cannot be an easy feat.

In her most memorable scene, our hearts broke for her, along with Cersei’s, as the young girl was forced to sail away from her family and everything she had ever known. Aimee has revealed in an interview that the strong emotions were made easier to portray by realizing that she too would be leaving her family, the Game of Thrones cast, for many years.

Despite not being allowed to read the books at her age, Aimee has shown her dedication to truly understanding the character, and embodied Myrcella despite the small amount of screen time she was given.

Myrcella will reappear in Dorne next season, as she has been promised to Trystane, son of Doran Martell, the Prince of Dorne. We’ll get to see how the arrangement is working out for the young prince and princess, but the torch has been passed to Nell Tiger Free.

If you happen to follow Aimee on social media, you’ll know that her enthusiasm for the show has been unparalleled. If a crown was given for the best reaction to the now infamous Purple Wedding, Aimee may well have been the winner.

I am personally sad to see a promising young actress leave the show, especially when her character is just getting started. Aimee has a lot of adoring fans (myself included), and has maintained a fantastic attitude throughout the turmoil. She has a great amount of talent, and will undoubtedly continue to find success as an actor, if she chooses to pursue it as a career.

In fact, she’s available as a princess for hire!

So in honor of Aimee I would like to thank her for joining us on Game of Thrones at such a young and important age, and leaving us far too early.
