Game of Thrones Season 5 wraps filming at Portstewart Strand
Filming of Game of Thrones Season 5 at Portstewart Strand has wrapped up, with locals and beach-goers returning to their regularly scheduled Instagram pictures of the sunset without a pesky film crew getting in the way.
It was a very busy week on social media, and an exciting look into the day to day filming of our favorite television show. Let’s take a quick look back at what we saw, and what spoilers were unveiled during Game of Thrones’ week at the beach.
Some of the newest pictures from the set come from herringpond on Flickr, who managed to get some very nice quality shots of the final few scenes filmed on Friday. The new pictures provide the best look at the Dornish guards yet, including the always amazing costume work on Thrones.
They also captured some clear shots of what appear to be Dornish locals travelling with donkeys carrying their goods and produce, which the photographer noted were all real.
Skipping back to the beginning of the week, the Dornish Guards were easily the most recognizable and photographed part of filming. Their bright yellow costumes were caught by quite a few cameras, and one of my favorite shots from the week has to be the first of the collection below:
Filming atop the dunes was shrouded in the most secrecy, as onlookers were only able to get a few far-away shots.
Here is where we are going to get into spoiler territory!
There had been much speculation prior to filming that Jaime Lannister would be arriving in Dorne, and this week solidified it. A commenter revealed that they were on set on August 4th and witnessed both Jaime and Bronn duelling with the Dornish Guards on the beach.
This was further confirmed by a leaked Site Access Plan, detailing that there would be a fight sequence filmed, but also a walk and talk scene between Jaime and Bronn, and that the small tent scene spotted was in fact Ellaria Sand’s, who would discover that Jaime and Bronn had arrived in Dorne.
On Thursday filming moved to the water, and PhotoPress Belfast managed to get a few pictures of two actors in a small boat being rowed towards shore. These two were presumably Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Jerome Flynn, with PhotoPress describing the shot as “beautifully silhouetted on the sea against the backdrop of Mussenden Temple and the Donegal hills across where the sun was setting on the horizon.”
Overall, filming caused quite a commotion in Portstewart Strand, especially when the beach was completely closed to the public. But one onlooker wisely said that “Closing the beach for a couple of days is a small price to pay for worldwide exposure for a spectacularly beautiful part of the country.“
A familiar phrase to Game of Thrones fans was written in the sand early on in the week, and Portstewart Strand’s Twitter account capped off filming with a message of their own.
