Game of Thrones maesters in new film, television projects

Apparently, one of the many maester’s chains you can craft during your studies at Oldtown is for acting, as two of Game of Thrones‘ own maesters are in new and upcoming projects. Donald Sumpter, who played Maester Luwin, will be in a new SundanceTV scripted drama called One Child, while Julian Glover (the spry and sneaky Grand Maester Pycelle) appears in a recent short film. Hit the jump for details.

One Child follows the story of a young Chinese-born woman (played by Katie Leung, best known as Cho Chang in the Harry Potter films) who is adopted by a UK couple. She is called back to China by her birth mother, whose son is facing execution after being wrongly accused of murder. The project also features Elizabeth Perkins alongside Sumpter; presumably they play the previously noted couple that adopt Mei at birth. The two-part series event premieres on SundanceTV on Friday, December 5th and Saturday, December 6th.

Elsewhere, Julian Glover makes an appearance in this fascinating short film, Exit. Directed by Daniel Zimbler based on a short story by Harry Farjeon, the film, set in a country manor in Edwardian England, centers on Glover’s character, who is asked to amuse the guests at a holiday party, and obliges by giving them a taste of black magic. No, really: black magic. It’s a creepy and effective piece, carried by Glover’s own particular capacity for delivering strong monologues. A maester’s chain well-earned, if you ask me.
