Karakter releases Game of Thrones Season 4 concept art

Karakter Design Studio has been the VFX concept art team behind Game of Thrones since Season 2. The design team were mostly video game-based  (KillzoneThe Settlers) prior to being hired by HBO, but their work on episode nine’s Battle of Blackwater helped the show earn an  Emmy win right out of the gate.

Since then, they’ve been bringing us the world of Westeros as we see it brought to life on the screen. As a perfect tie in to this week’s WiCnet Awards, Karakter happened to release the concept art for Season 4.  Above, King’s Landing the day of Joffrey and Margaery’s wedding.

The Titan of Braavos is now the first thing we see every time we cross the Narrow Sea, and helps define a city we know little about so far.

Contrast that with ramshackle and rundown Moat Cailin, which the designers created based on the “Motte and Bailey model.”

When it comes to North of The Wall, and designing the wights and the Others, “The visual design of the wights had to tell a story, so everything had to make sense: What kind of people could have died North of The Wall?” According to designer Robert Simon “Some had died a long time ago, which gave them the look of an ice mummy.”

Designing The Children of the Forest was one of the hardest parts of this season. “We had to avoid the look of an elf or a fairy, while keeping the physiognomy of the actress unchanged.”

The Mammoths and Giants were some of the most memorable and impressive work of the season.
