Sophie Turner talks “traumatic scene” for Season 5
The British Independent Film Awards were this past weekend, and though Game of Thrones was not nominated for anything, a couple of the cast members were on hand. Charles Dance, who ended his run on the show in a rather dramatic fashion at the end of last season, was in attendance as part of his work in The Imitation Game. Sophie Turner was also on hand as a presenter.
As always, when interviewers caught up with them on the red carpet, all they wanted to ask about was Game of Thrones. We’ve got interviews from both actors courtesy of HeyUGuys below the cut. Minor spoilers and speculation ahead.
Dance was first asked about Best Actor nominee and fellow cast member in The Imitation Game, Benedict Cumberbatch. But when asked about Season 5, he got oddly mum about how he’ll appear in the show, considering that he admitted outright to The Daily Beast recently that it would be as a dead body lying in state. Still, it’s worth watching just for Dance’s reaction to Cumberbatch’s recent Marvel casting news.
Meanwhile, Turner’s answers were more interesting and mysterious. As readers know, Sansa’s character on the TV show has entered a sort of mirror universe of her storyline in the books, having made the radical choice to reveal herself as Sansa Stark to the Lords Declarant in “The Mountain and the Viper” this past season, instead of spending much more time pretending to be Littlefinger’s bastard daughter, Alayne Stone. Though this is, on the whole, an improvement on her character from the books, it does mean that we basically have to throw out everything we know that happens to her in A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons.
So what traumatic scene could she be referring to? My assumption is that we are skipping ahead here to a scene that was rumored to be cut from ADWD and moved to The Winds of Winter. Elio Garcia mentioned that he had read it to Vulture in an interview last year. (Interview here, skip down to “Dinner.”) At the time, much was made of it being called “sure to be controversial.” That seems impressive, especially when you consider that nearly everything Sansa has done since she refused to back up Arya’s story in “The Kingsroad” has been controversial.
Alternately, it could be something well outside of what Martin’s written. What do you think could it be? Speculate away below.
