Arya Stark’s Season 5 costume unveiled
Entertainment Weekly has pictures of Arya Stark’s costume design for Season 5, as well as quotes from Maisie Williams and costume designer Michele Clapton. It’s a major change–EW calls it an extreme makeover–for the youngest Stark daughter, who’s spent the past three seasons in dirty road clothes.“For so long she had to look like a boy. Even when [the disguise] was no longer necessary, it made no sense to change it [because] she was on the road,” said Clapton.
We’ve seen some photos of Arya Stark’s Braavosi costume during filming, but they were largely from a distance. Check those out below, with some more quotes…
“I had my hair braided up to these big buns and bits of jewelry and a jumper thing with a long skirt, and I came onto the set and nobody recognized me,” says Williams. I remember when we first got these photos, it took a minute for me to realize that that’s not just a Braavos set filled with extras, but that’s one of our stars right in the center. This is looking like a huge transitional season, and costume changes for characters like Arya, Sansa, and Tyrion show just how far HBO is going to indicate that visually–and quite well, I might add.
Meanwhile, after an interview in which Maisie Williams suggested she wanted to avoid trouble with the press in her career, her words have caused some more trouble–though this one is more accidental than the feminism row. Various sites have taken the innocuous phrase “It’s the end of Arya as far as anyone knows” and launched headlines like “Did Maisie Williams just drop a huge Game of Thrones spoiler?” I’m not linking because the phrase is so overtly ambiguous and metaphorical that it would require deliberate misinterpretation to act like it’s a spoiler. So know that if you see that headline in the next few days, the answer is “No. Clearly. Stop that.”
