Mark Gatiss hints at his Season 5 role

Mark Gatiss isn’t the largest role in the Game of Thrones universe. He’s much more well known for writing Doctor Who and writing and appearing in Sherlock. But When he went in front of an audience Q&A at the Mumbai Film and ComicCon last week, it was a sure thing he’d be asked about his role as Tycho Nestoris and if he’d give out details from Season 5.

Interestingly, when asked by NDTV about Game of Thrones, he seemed least interested in it than any of the three shows he’s involved in.  Though he admitted he was “drawn to anything odd,” he seemed less enthused about Game of Thrones as a “very violent world.”

We’ve got the full Q&A embedded below from the ComicCon. It is mostly Sherlock and Doctor Who based, but there is one *very* interesting question he asks the audience, which suggests his storyline this season won’t necessarily go where we suspect it will. (NOTE: MINOR SPOILERS FOR GATISS’ CHARACTER BELOW)

The relevant footage starts at about 21 minutes in.

“I’ve just filmed another episode in Croatia. But obviously I can’t tell you anything because they would have me killed. That’s how it works.”

We knew about him filming in Croatia, as we saw the pictures from fans of him meeting Westerosi characters at the docks. But what he says as the audience member prods for more information is the interesting part.

“Well, I don’t know, I think… I think Tycho Nestoris is from later in the books and they’ve brought him forward a bit. I think I go.. I go to… Do I go to the Wall?”

There’s an enthusiastic shout of yes from the audience. But I was startled. If Gatiss is asking if he goes to The Wall, that suggests he hasn’t gotten that far in his storyline. He buttonholes that with  “That means I get to go to Iceland! Very exciting!” It almost confirms that he hasn’t filmed there yet. But then again, this is the man known for some serious misdirection on both Sherlock and Doctor Who, and clearly subscribes to the Moffat theory of main characters not telling you the truth–and asking questions is a good way to avoid answering direct questions. We’ll have to wait and see when Season 5 airs next year.

His interview with Telegraph India does seem to suggest he only did one episode this season though, and since we know that it was in Croatia, it seems to confirm that Tycho won’t go beyond Braavos. He also mentions the same dinner with Benioff and Weiss he does in the video.

I’ve just been in one episode and I had dinner with David and Dan, the show runners, and I tried to pitch the idea that I should be the last character who survives, to the very end of the series. Because if anyone has to survive it surely has to be the banker! That’s what they do don’t they? They are like cockroaches; they’ll survive any nuclear war! They just smiled (laughs). But it’s been very nice to be part of it.

The big question for readers, though: is this a clue about the structure of Season 5?
Tycho Nestoris’ main role in A Dance of Dragons is to show up to bail Stannis’ army out of a bad situation–and lead to the Battle in the Ice that apparently starts the sixth book. If he’s in Braavos and only in Braavos, that means he’s not going to join Stannis this season. It’s possible that the show has decided that his scene in Season 4 filled that role from a different direction, and all will proceed as planned in the North. But the lack of casting news for major Northern characters like Jeyne Poole and Wyman Manderley–with no obvious replacements–and apparent lack of Nestoris in the North could also mean that the Battle in the Ice either isn’t going to be built toward this season, or that it’ll be totally different from the books. Curiouser and curiouser….
