HBO announces Season 5 premiere date: April 12th, 2015

HBO has just announced that Game of Thrones will be returning on April 12th! The announcement was timed to coincide with their panel at the Television Critics Association meetings, and if there’s more news then, we’ll let you know.

This air date is a little bit later than it has been across the last three seasons, which have been the very end of March or the first week of April, but it’s close to the first season, which aired its first episode on April 17th. Those unsubstantiated rumors about a delay for the show’s airdate have been swirling, but appear to be almost totally false. One more grounded explanation for why it’s slightly later: HBO wants their upgraded streaming service to be ready.

Game of Thrones will be premiering that night alongside the second season of Silicon Valley and the fourth season of Veep.
