Ranking each Game of Thrones season’s trailer
In five days (January 29th), the first official trailer for Game of Thrones Season 5, will be shown in all its IMAX glory. For me, the anticipation that has been slowly building since that official announcement, has been palpable to say the least.
With that in mind, I’ve gone back through the Game of Thrones YouTube channel and re-watched each season’s trailer, with the thought of ranking each one…and it’s not as easy as one might imagine.
See how I rank each trailer after the jump
It’s hard to believe that we are quickly approaching the four year mark, since the first episode of Game of Thrones aired on HBO. I can remember watching that first trailer, goosebumps running up and down my spine, as some of my favorite characters from A Song of Ice and Fire came to life on the television screen.
With that being said, coming in at number four on the list, is the trailer for Season 2. Don’t get me wrong, just because it sits in the last spot on my list, does not mean I did not love it when it first aired.
What I love about this trailer is quite simply, Varys’ speech to Tyrion. In my opinion, Varys really blossomed in Season 2, and his speech in the trailer acted as a springboard for the entire season.
Coming in at number three, the trailer for Season 1. Seeing Sean Bean as Eddard Stark and thinking that he was the perfect actor for that role, pretty much cemented the entire first season for me. Also, hearing him tell Bran “The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword” ranks up there with “You know nothing Jon Snow” as some of my all time favorite Game of Thrones/ASOIAF quotes.
At number two, the trailer for Season 3. This trailer really had it all. The first look at Mance Rayder, Tormund climbing the Wall, and Beric Dondarrion fighting the Hound with his fiery sword. But, the end of the trailer is what pulled me in. Drogon flying up to Daenerys’ ship while Varys’ says “The revenge you want will be yours in time” quite simply, left me ravenously wanting more.
That leaves the trailer for Season 4, as my number one favorite trailer in the series, so far. The opening shot of a large dragon shadow passing over King’s Landing, was the best open for any of the previous three trailers. I absolutely loved everything about the trailer for Season 4.
The passing dragon shadow, Joffrey sitting at his wedding feast, the champion of Meereen charging Daario, Dany holding court, and Tyrion walking to his trial in chains, this trailer was a pure adrenaline rush. However, the best part of Season 4’s trailer was Oberyn.
“Tell your father I’m here and tell him the Lannisters aren’t the only ones who pay their debts“, followed by the brief but exciting glimpse of his fight with The Mountain, instantly made Prince Oberyn Martell my favorite character of Season 4.
The trailer for Season 5 will be shown at your local participating IMAX theater during the viewing of the last two episodes of Season 4, and I think that I am more excited for this trailer, than any of the previous four trailers combined. Game of Thrones Season 5 will premiere on April 12.
