Benioff gives quiet shout-out to fan theory
Yesterday, as part of the marketing hype for Game of Thrones in IMAX, we got a video of Benioff and Weiss having just watched “The Watchers on the Wall/The Children” on the big screen. I was focused on what they were saying in the video, and their emotional reaction to seeing their work writ large, and completely missed something.
That something (which is spoilery!)–below….
So I noted the emblem on his shirt, but I didn’t look closely at it, and I didn’t read the stitching. R+L=….
This is the second shout out to the popular fan theory we’ve run across this month. The problem remains of course, that with the exception of those small “Easter eggs” and a few nods to it back in Season 1, this is a mystery that has basically been dropped from the show. The lack of of prophecies, flashbacks and story telling that the books are able to bring to the table that the show has eschewed up until now, made it very difficult for the production to shoehorn this in. *this is why the flashback I’d most like to see in Season 5 is The Year of The False Spring.)
Still, it’s nice to know that Benioff and Weiss seem to be aware of the problem, and gives me hope that perhaps in the coming season, this long dormant thread could finally rear its head once more. But then again, sometimes a polo shirt is just a polo shirt…
