Weekend box office estimates: Game of Thrones edition
IMAX and HBO’s grand experiment in bringing television to the big screen looks to be tracking towards success with estimates ranging from between $1.5 to a $2million domestic haul this weekend.
Game of Thrones already created a record on Thursday night and Friday as the first television show to debut on the big (or the very big) screen. Numbers for opening day are confirmed at $686,000 from 205 screens, higher than IMAX originally thought. That number only gets more impressive when you consider that this is basically a rerun of two episodes fans had seen already, and was not modified or worked up in any way to make it accessible to the casual movie fans who might not be already familiar with the series.
More after the jump…
Current estimates from Warner Brothers tracking suggest the seven day special airing will bring in up to $1.5 million in its first three days in theaters. IMAX’s numbers are as little more ambitious, suggesting they could near $2 million. If the show does indeed track to the higher number, that would be an average of $9,800 per theater. not bad for something that was basically a no-risk deal for IMAX. To compare Game of Thrones to its major competition in IMAX theaters this weekend, American Sniper is on track to only make an average of $7,695 per screen this weekend, but it’s already been open for over three weeks.
The assumption is also that today’s numbers will play lower than a usual Sunday, due to the Super Bowl. We’ll have the official three day tally tomorrow.
