George R.R. Martin comments on The Winds of Winter release date

Much has been made regarding the release date for the 6th book’s release date  in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, The Winds of Winter. Just recently, Time and others claimed that Martin’s publisher, Jane Johnson had confirmed that we would not see The Winds of Winter in 2015.

Of course, with anything of this nature, the wording became muddled and incorrect facts were reported. What Jane Johnson actually said was that The Winds of Winter was not currently on the schedule for 2015. Now the Wall Street Journal has weighed in, reporting that Martin himself has commented on the fiasco.

See what Martin said after the jump.

When will The Winds of Winter join the A Song of Ice and Fire novels

The Wall Street Journal included, in the piece, a quote they claimed was from George R R Martin’s Not a Blog on yesterday, February 6th.

“I certainly hope that THE WINDS OF WINTER is not on the schedule of ANY of my publishers. I have spent years trying to persuade them all not to schedule my books until they are completed and delivered. Scheduling, and then having to reschedule and postpone, just pisses people off. I’d rather not schedule at all until the date is real and certain.

This flies against standard publishing practice, however, so it’s a battle that I do not always win.”

For the nonce we fans of A Song of Ice and Fire will have to harken to George’s other thoughts on the matter:

“I don’t play games with news about the books.  I know how many people are waiting, how long they have been waiting, how anxious they are.   I am still working on WINDS.  When it’s done, I will announce it here.  There won’t be any clues to decipher, any codes or hidden meanings, the announcement will be straightforward and to the point.  I won’t time it to coincide with Xmas or Valentine’s Day or Lincoln’s Birthday, the book will not rise from the dead with Jesus on Easter Sunday.  When it is done, I will say that’s it is done, on whatever day I happen to finish.”

“I don’t know how I can make it any clearer.”

UPDATE: It took some digging through the comments of a post from February 3rd, but I found the quote. My intention was not to insinuate that WSJ falsely reported the quote, I simply could not find it. That’s on me. My apologies.
