“Game of Thrones: The Exhibition” Opens Today In London

As we reported last month, Game of Thrones: The Exhibition is back for a third year running, with all-new installations that include Season 4 and Season 5. It opens today in London’s O2 Arena, and will run though Thursday, and then again from the 15th-17th. Other cities are listed to follow, including Madrid, Paris and Berlin, but the only confirmed dates are in Tel Aviv in April. As you can see from the picture above, John Bradley, who plays Sam, was on hand for the Grand Opening, and willingly posed with fans, even when they threatened his life with toy props.

Below, we’ve got a SkyAtlantic video on the event opening.

According to the IBTimes:

[T]he exhibition is exclusive to Sky TV customers, allowing them to see some of the amazing costumes and props used in the show.

As well as showcasing the various get-ups of Houses Stark, Lannister, Baratheon and Targaryen, visitors can also take part in the interactive exhibits. You can strap on an Occulus Rift and ascend the Wall in a 4D virtual reality experience, as well as have a picture of yourself turned into a White Walker.

The Independent reports this year’s exhibit includes more than 70 items from the fourth and fifth series, including “a Meereenese mask” and “the hammer and nails used to crucify the Masters of Meereen.” The Mountain’s sword (which is 5ft 4in) is also displayed. But one of the big draws is the Oculus Rift VR headset, which puts you in the Seven Kingdoms. (Sadly, the trip only lasts a minute.)

As The Guardian describes it:

Donning the Oculus Rift VR headset, you could be Jon Snow himself patrolling the top of the Wall, the 300-mile fortification that helps defend Westeros from the Wildlings and White Walkers who live beyond. Or picture yourself in one of the 28 outfits worn by the show’s many characters, alive and dead, that are on display.

Among the outfits on show are the intricately woven black and gold gown worn by Cersei Lannister, the thick brown leather robes of her brother Jamie Lannister and Margaery Tyrell’s intricate wedding dress complete with embroidered train, which took 200 hours to make.

Jamie Lannister’s gold hand sits hauntingly in a glass case next to the poison-filled necklace given to Sansa Stark in season four and a delicate glass vial containing the essence of nightshade.

As is to be expected from the blood-soaked drama – which has used more than 10,000 weapons – armaments also feature heavily. The feathered crossbow used by Tyrion Lannister to kill his father is mounted on velvet, while Eddard Stark’s sword Ice hangs next to Arya Stark’s sword Needle. Jon Snow’s trusty weapon Longclaw sits next to his black robes.

Other installations include a green screen where fans can be engulfed by a breath of flames from the dragon Drogon and, perhaps most iconic of all, a replica iron throne, which visitors can sit on.

Sadly, one of the places this exhibit will not be coming is America. As this is produced by SkyAtlantic, it is only traveling to countries that air the show on that network.
