Behind the scenes of Season 4’s Purple Wedding
With the Season 4 DVDs release date only a few days away now, exclusive footage from each version has started to hit the web in order to encourage shoppers to pledge their allegiance, not to House Stark or House Lannister, but to Target or Walmart.
Both behind-the-scenes clips that came out yesterday focus on one of the biggest events from last season, the infamous Purple Wedding between Joffrey and Margaery. In the first, which is from the Target Blu Ray/DVD extra, Silk, Leather & Chain Mail, we get an in-depth look at Margaery’s stunning blue wedding gown, with all the rose and thorn detailing, as well as commentary from Natalie Dormer and costume designer Michelle Clapton. This exclusive package extra will only be sold through Target, provides an in-depth look at all the costumes of Season 4.
The second clip is from Walmart’s exclusive featurettes, and focuses on one of the most shockingly ridiculous scenes during the 20 minute reception, the surprise battle of dwarf jesters.
Check out the clips below…
In this ETOnline clip, Clapton and Dormer claim that the original shot list was changed in order to feature Margaery’s wedding gown more closely. But my favorite tidbit was how the Baratheon crown that Joffrey wore was entwined with roses and thrones, which were designed to look like they were slowly strangling the stag points. (Foreshadowing!)
In this clip from Vulture, we learn that the dwarf battle was kept out of sight from the cast up until the first take, so that the director, Alex Graves, could get the genuine shocked reactions of the cast on the dais when they saw them for he first time. But my favorite tidbit from it is that Benioff and Weiss originally wanted the dwarves to ride pigs, as they do in the books. Apparently the stunt coordinators put the kibosh on that first thing, which is what lead to the hilarious puppet style mounts that ended up on screen (and were an upgrade on mere pigs.)
