Metal band Mastodon release Catch the Throne track
Catch the Throne Volume II drops March 17th, and after multiple teases from other artists featured on the mixtape, metal band Mastodon have released their contribution, a haunting track called “White Walker”, through Pitchfork. Mastodon joins Anthrax and Killswitch Engage to provide the metal side of the Mixtape.
Listen to the full track below.
Like all tracks on both this and the first mixtape, “White Walker” samples both music and sounds from the show itself. Naturally for a track called “White Walker”, this song pulls from the musical themes used mostly in the North, and particularly for the Wall, the wildlings, and the epic battle that occurred in episode 9 of last season.
The track also opens with the cry of that baby who was turned (?) into a wight at the end of “Oathkeeper”–a show-only moment that sent Twitter into overdrive (as the show often does). The sparse lyrics seem to speak of an impending invasion of the White Walkers, but in a move that is probably wise given the mixtape’s patchy history with lyrics, the band focus more on crafting a particular kind of ominous ambiance that, appropriately, chills to the bone.
