Game of Thrones Season 5 Episode 1: An early review from Forbes

The Game of Thrones Season 5 red carpet event went down today at the Tower of London. The event was staged to premiere the first episode of Season 5 to the cast , crew, and anyone involved with bringing Game of Thrones to TV, and of course to the few lucky civilians who got an invitation. ForbesNeil Midgley was in attendance, and he has just now written a lite review of Episode 1.

See the review after the jump, and beware of SPOILERS.

You’ve been warned.

Mr. Midgley had the privilege of writing his particular review from the actual Tower of London, which is pretty darn cool, in its own right.

“I’m writing this review from the Tower of London – yes, the actual Tower, where kings were killed and the Crown Jewels still live – where an enormous tent is hosting a lavish after-party.”

His description of the atmosphere in the theater shows an enthusiastic audience.

“We’ve all just watched episode 1 of season 5 of ‘Game of Thrones’, and it was a spectacle that got applause at the beginning, laughter in the middle and huge applause at the end.”

Here’s where the preview of Episode 1 kicks in, so this is your last chance to turn back before you get a minor touch of spoiler.

“Who is this mysterious maiden, trooping muddily through the woods, and visiting a cottage that’s straight out of ‘Hansel and Gretel’? And when she gets inside to find the witchy old soothsayer, which of these predictions will come true?”

For those of you who have been following the casting of Season 5, and if you are familiar with the news that this season will have the very first flashback in Game of Thrones history, then you know what this scene is from. That’s young Cersei going to see Maggy the Frog.

“In the sunshine of Meereen, there’s a magnificent set-piece that surely heralds a difficult season ahead for poor Daenerys.”

Dany headed for some trouble?

“In the cold at the Wall, Jon Snow once again wonders about his vows – though not, this time, due to lust for a Wildling maiden. There’s more at stake.”

Perhaps Stannis is offering Jon something that he has always wanted, his entire life?

“And tantalisingly, one of the most central protagonists of season 4 is entirely missing from this first episode.”

Maybe he is talking about Arya? There have been rumors that we wont see Arya until the second episode, and he did use the word “protagonist”, so it narrows the field quite a bit.

“‘Game of Thrones’ is also a show that thrives on the forging of unlikely alliances between characters – and thrives even more when those alliances come to sudden and bloody ends. Both of those happen in this season opener.”

I have no idea what he is referring to here, but boy are my interests piqued and my wheels a turning. April 12th cannot get get here fast enough.
