Kit Harington talks about Jon Snow’s “emotional constipation” in new interview

The Game of Thrones season premiere is almost here. When it arrives, it may signal an end to the long stream of cast and crew interviews that have been trotted out in advance of the big day. In the meantime, we’ve got a couple of new interviews with Kit Harington, who’s gotten quite a lot of play during the lead-up to Season 5.

First, Harington sat down with The Argus and gave his opinions about the eventual ending of the show and the possibility of a Game of Thrones motion picture. Basically, his opinion is that he has no opinion.  “I wouldn’t want to know how it ends. I don’t know whether it will end with a motion picture,” he said. “The show may end up a different thing from the books, they are different things already and I feel very safe in David and Dan’s hands in how they handle the rest of the show for however long that goes on for and George will write an epic ending for his saga.”

You’re making it pretty hard not to make a “You know nothing, Jon Snow” joke here, Harington. Work with us. Anyway, the actor was also featured in the New York Daily News, which printed an account of him giving journalists a tour around the Magheramorne Quarry in Northern Ireland, where the show films a lot of exterior shots. There’re some interesting descriptions of the hustle and bustle of daily life on the set, but the money quote comes when Harington describes Jon Snow’s current state of mind.

“He’s still the same. He’s emotionally constipated in some ways — I always felt that I couldn’t connect him to the emotional side of myself because he’s not a modern person. He’s very much like his father, very withheld. He behaves very much in the old world sense of what a man should be, and it’s stifled him somewhat.”

This is actually a pretty unflattering description of Jon Snow, which is a little surprising considering he’s one of the few characters left who could be considered an unambiguous good guy. Then again, this show has never been especially kind to unambiguous good guys—just ask Ned Stark—so maybe Harington is right to focus on Jon’s faults.
