HBO Now Passes First Test of The Wars To Come

HBO Go may have collapsed under the weight of eager Game of Thrones streamers in seasons past–and again last night–but HBO Now proved last night that streaming can perform under pressure. Though the service only dropped Tuesday, leaving very little room for error, when the time came last night for last night’s premiere, the news is that there was no news. HBO Now performed “admirably,” without a single peep out of users about crashes, stutters or freezes.

Whether HBO Now held up because of the extremely limited release is a case many will argue, and could possibly be why the one worked fine, while HBO GO had the usual litany of errors, from the show not appearing online until well after 9pm to the entire thing simply crashing.

HBO Go’s continuing woes are more in line with the experience most have with streaming. HBO Now’s launch less than a week ago means we don’t have subscription numbers yet either. But in media, appearance is everything, and even if it turns out that HBO Now’s ability to hold up under pressure is due to low demand, it still makes an impression on those who will consider switching when the Apple exclusive period ends in the summer.
