Gwendoline Christie spotted (maybe) in new Star Wars trailer
So Star Wars is a popular science fiction series–you may have heard of it–that will shortly be getting a new movie entry. Gwendoline Christie, who plays Brienne of Tarth on Game of Thrones, was recently cast in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens, although it still isn’t confirmed what role she’ll play. A new trailer The Force Awakens debuted today during the Star Wars Celebration fan convention in Anaheim, California, and although no one can be sure whether Christie made an appearance, fans are already claiming to have spotted her around the 1:20 mark. Watch the trailer for yourself below.
When it comes to a series like Star Wars, security surrounding the plot is incredibly tight. If producers don’t want information to get out, it probably won’t, but that hasn’t kept people from speculating. Word around the digital rumor mill is that Christie will be playing Captain Phasma, a high-ranking “chrome stormtrooper” and the commanding officer to Finn (John Boyega), one of the movie’s lead characters. The mystery stormtrooper around the 1:20 mark hits all of those marks: chrome polish, wearing a black-and-red cape only an menacing military commander could pull off, and walking toward the screen like she’s about to wreck some people’s faces.
If true, and it may not be, this would mean that Christie is playing a villain, a far cry from the noble-almost-to-a-fault character she plays on Game of Thrones. Regardless of who she ends up playing, landing a role in a Star Wars movie is major coup for any actor, so congratulations to Christie on achieving this career milestone.
