Original Iron Throne Headed To Dubrovnik
In a recent behind-the-scenes video about the Croatian cities used to stand in for places in Westeros and Essos, Benioff referred to Dubrovnik as the show’s “home away from home.” Not only has the Old City stood in for King’s Landing, but last year it also doubled for some of the outdoor scenes in Braavos as well.
Now tourists have even more reason to visit, as if taking a holiday in King’s Landing (or Braavos) wasn’t attraction enough. Perhaps looking forward to the day that will arrive in two (maybe three) years when the show has wrapped and tourists stop coming to see it being filmed in action, Dubrovnik has started investing in Game of Thrones memorabilia, with a planned Game of Thrones museum to follow. The city will begin with the seat of power everyone’s always arguing over.
According to Croatia Week, the city has purchased the original Iron Throne. Apparently, for the past few years, tourists have been asking why there is no replica for them to take pictures with.
Dubrovnik Andro Vlahušić says that there is no need for a replica, which has previously spent some time in the city, because they have just purchased the original.
One might think that Dubrovnik must have paid handsomely, if not the Iron price, for such a prop. Or that they would have to wait until the show ends to display it. But that’s not true.
“This summer at the start of June the original GoT Iron Throne will be situated here, and it will stay permanently. We purchased it for not much money, HBO practically gave it to us,” Vlahušić told RTL Direkt, adding that a museum dedicated to the series and its characters was planned for Dubrovnik’s famous Stradun.
Well, to be fair, the show probably has several Iron Thrones in the prop shop. And I’m sure the production wants to stay on the best of terms with Dubrovnik’s government for the remainder of the show’s run. Besides, this sort of gift might smooth over any ruffled feather, in case someone decides to object to certain scenes being filmed again.
