Game of Thrones Cast Joins NBC’s Red Nose Day

We all know that US network television has tried to import UK television programs over the last few decades with varying levels of success. For every success story (Pop Idol remade as American Idol), there’s five Couplings, IT Crowds, and failures to import Gavin & Stacey. But this might be a first—NBC has decided to import a charity special.

Red Nose Day (for the non US crowd) is a charity special born out of Comic Relief, a ’80s-era charity to end homelessness. This isn’t the first time the US has tried to bring it over here. Robin Williams, Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg headlined the US version in the later ’80s, which ran on HBO. The US version was on TV, on and off, until 2010. But on the BBC, the special has run nearly every year, and though it might not be as popular as the Christmas time marathon Children In Need, it still raises millions of pounds. The British version just aired in March of this year.

Now NBC will be bringing the special over here in just a couple weeks’ time, on May 21st. And although NBC’s website seems to mainly feature NBC sitcom stars, Variety is reporting that, as the date grows closer, more Brits are signing up. Yesterday, they announced that eleven stars from Game of Thrones (along with Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne) had committed to appear. The list includes current stars of the show—including Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Iwan Rheon, Alfie Allen, John Bradley, and Charlotte Hope—as well as those whose characters have died, like Mark Addy, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and Rose Leslie. And just in case you were worried it was only UK stars, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will be there as well. Peter Dinklage, one of the very few Americans in the cast, will also appear.

There’s no word on if they’ll be appearing in a pretaped segment or sketch, or if they’ll just be manning phones while wearing silly noses.
