Game of Thrones Picks Up Two TCA Nominations

The nominations for the 31st Television Critics Association Awards (known as the TCAs) were announced yesterday, and Game of Thrones was once again among those honored. HBO had the most nominations of any network, seven in all. Of those seven, two went to Game of Thrones, for Outstanding Achievement in Drama, and Program of the Year, both of which are categories it has won in previous years. Three of HBO’s other five nominations were in the miniseries category for Bessie, The Jinx, and Olive Kitterage. The other two were for comedy programs, with last year’s winner Julia-Louise Dreyfus being nominated again for Veep, and Late Night with John Oliver nominated against The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in the “News and Information” category.

Though Game of Thrones has been honored with nominations in both the Outstanding Achievement in Drama and Program of the Year categories every year since it debuted in 2011, it is not a lock to win. The show was shut out last year after taking Outstanding Drama in 2013, and it hasn’t won Program of the Year since 2012. (In 2011 it won for Outstanding New Program, but not for Program of the Year or Outstanding Drama.) This year, it’s up against Mad Men in both categories, which is the favorite since the series finale just aired a couple of weeks ago, so chances are the producers will go home empty-handed again.

We should also note that Peter Dinklage was not nominated for his performance this year, and hasn’t been since 2012. In such a large cast, individual acting nominations seem hard to come by, and Dinklage seems to be the only one who has ever been able to push past that. I’m sorry to see that it wasn’t so this year.

Here are the categories in which Game of Thrones is nominated for 2015, and the competition it will be going up against:

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN DRAMA
“The Americans,” FX
“Empire,” Fox
“Game of Thrones,” HBO
“Justified,” FX
“Mad Men,” AMC

PROGRAM OF THE YEAR
“The Americans,” FX
“Empire,” Fox
“Game of Thrones,” HBO
“Mad Men,” AMC
“Transparent,” Amazon
