Between the trailer and the synopsis, there’s a lot to get excited about. If that line about Daenerys overseeing a “celebration of athleticism” is any indication, this episode will adapt a crucial scene from A Dance with Dragons. If the show can pull it off, and their facility with big special effects scenes this seasons suggests they can, it should be quite a show.
It looks like we’ll also get some quieter, but no less intense, moments along the way. In “The Gift,” Melisandre suggested child sacrifice as a means to help Stannis’ war effort. Odds are that the “troubling decision” Stannis confronts has something to do with this. “If a man knows what he is, he must fulfill his destiny.” I’m not sure what that means, but it makes me nervous.
Speaking of a man, the trailer includes Jaqen H’ghar telling Arya that “a girl has work to do.” Arya will doubtlessly try to carry out the hit on the insurance salesman we met last week, but will she get distracted by that certain someone “from her past?” If you’ve been paying attention, it’s not hard to guess who that someone will be.
In short, all the pieces are in place for a bang-up episode of Game of Thrones. To top it off, “The Dance of Dragons” was directed by David Nutter, the guy behind “The Rains of Castemere,” a tentpole episode if there ever was one.
We’ll be back after the episode with recaps tailored for both those who have read the novels and those who have never cracked one open. Until then, chat away.
