“The Dance of Dragons” nets the show its best ratings since the season premiere
After suffering through something of a mid-season slump, Game of Thrones seems to be over its ratings woes. “Woe” is a relative term, of course, since it couldn’t be rightly said that the show ever performed poorly this year, but when you’re had the kind of success Game of Thrones has had, pulling in a mere 5.40 million live viewers over Memorial Day weekend isn’t going to cut it. After bouncing back with “Hardhome,” the show pulled in its best ratings since the premiere with “The Dance of Dragons,” which was watched live by 7.14 million people.
It would seem that people tuned in to watch “The Dance of Dragons” after catching up with the previous episodes. Although it was the lowest-performing live episode of the season, well over 3 million more people viewed “The Gift” during the week after it debuted. “Hardhome” also posted impressive growth following its May 31st air date. The show has been ramping up the intensity over the past few weeks, and it would appear that the viewers have responded.
If the season finale builds on the momentum created by “Hardhome” and “The Dance of Dragons,” Season 5 may very well go out on a series high. After all, every previous season finale pulled in better numbers than its premiere. At this point, “The Wars to Come” remains the show’s best-rated episode to date. Can “Mother’s Mercy” best it?
