Storyboarding the Chaos in Daznak’s Pit
Making Game of Thrones has a two-for-one set of posts up covering storyboard artist Will Simpson’s drawings for some of the most intense sequences from last Sunday’s episode, “The Dance of Dragons.” Focusing on Daznak’s Pit, the drawings run through the most human-heavy aspects of the pit sequence—the end of Jorah’s fight into the Harpy attack, and then Dany and her crew down on the floor of the pit just before Drogon’s arrival.
First up, take a look at the set of images pertaining to the Sons of the Harpy reveal, which show Jorah winning a battle only to stare down Dany…or someone behind her.
Note that there’s VFX involved with the actual spear toss. Iain Glen did not, it would appear, learn to throw a spear with enough accuracy to just narrowly miss Emilia Clarke’s face.
“Harpys Everywhere” should be the name of a big time indie band in Meereen, should it not?
In the second set, Hizdahr is already dead and Dany and company are down on the floor of the pit, attempting to cross to the far door.
Note that Daario’s name is misspelled. It’s slightly comforting that Martin’s character’s names are difficult for everyone. There seems to be less excuse for not having the proper plural spelling of “Harpies.”
On the other hand, I am not sure that Daenerys Targaryen, Mother of Dragons, Queen of the Andals and Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea would take so kindly if she knew Simpson had called her a wuss.
