The Beautiful Death of the Game of Thrones Season 5 Finale

There were a lot of deaths to choose from in the Game of Thrones finale, “Mother’s Mercy.” With six deaths in the course of an hour and three minutes, that’s about one death every ten minutes. Robert Ball had a lot of choices to pick from for this week’s Beautiful Death entry—Selyse, Stannis, Myranda, Myrcella, Meryn Trant, and of course, Jon Snow.

Who did Ball pick? Well, for those looking for proof that Jon Snow has not shuffled off this mortal coil, take hope! Ball passed him over this time. (And you would think he would be mandatory, right?)

Instead, Ball went with the *other* death people are theorizing didn’t happen—that of Stannis Baratheon. It’s a good choice, especially since he didn’t memorialize Shireen last week. And though the words that accompany the poster are Stannis’ last ones to Brienne, “Go on, do your duty” (so perfect, so Stannis), note that there is not just the male stag in the picture to represent Stannis and House Baratheon. The doe is also there, just a little father back, representing Selyse, who also came to her end in a copse of trees in the woods. A two-for-one for the finale, and the end of House Baratheon.
