Carice Van Houten (Melisandre) teases her big role in Season 6

It’s been over a week since Game of Thrones concluded its fifth season with “Mother’s Mercy,” one of the most brutal hours in the show’s history. In an episode packed with bleak moments, one stood out: the murder of Jon Snow, the Bastard of Winterfell, 998th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, who was stabbed to death by his own lieutenants.

Right before that happened, Melisandre the Red Priestess arrived at Castle Black after having abandoned Stannis Baratheon to die a chilly death outside the walls of Winterfell. It hasn’t taken long for fans to connect the dots between these two events. They’ve theorized that Melisandre, who had previously met a member of her order with the power to resurrect the dead, might pull some mojo on Jon Snow and bring him back to life.

Carice Van Houten, the actress who plays Melisandre, recently sat down with The New Daily to talk about filming Season 5 and what might be in store for her character come Season 6. What she had to say…didn’t really clear anything up, but that won’t stop us from speculating.

To start, Van Houten summarized some of the interaction Melisandre had with Jon over the course of the season. “You’ve seen her clock Jon Snow, which is a great ending because you think, ‘Uh oh, what’s going to happen there?’” she said. “You feel that she is concentrating more and more towards Jon Snow … there are slight hints that something’s going to happen.”

In addition to their final meeting, we shouldn’t forget that Melisandre made a blatant sexual overture toward Jon back in “Sons of the Harpy,” presumably because she wanted to give birth to another shadow baby. So yes, the show has established that she’s interested in the guy.

But is she interested enough, and does she have enough power, to try and resurrect him? If the producers are planning something like that, they’re keeping very tight-lipped about it, which is only to be expected. Also, Van Houten obviously isn’t going to spoil anything, not unless she wants to really tick off her employers. She did, however, let slip a little hint about something coming in Season 6.

I was doing ADR the other day and then the producer was there and he was saying something that I’ve heard before, which is quite spectacular, for next year, which I really can’t say anything about.

ADR, for those who aren’t aware, stands for “automated dialogue replacement,” and involves an actor coming in to rerecord and synchronize her lines, something that happens often on Game of Thrones. Van Houten’s claim that a producer talked about something “quite spectacular” coming “next year” is incredibly vague, and could be referring to almost anything—who’s to say that this spectacular something even has anything to do with Melisandre?

Obsessive fans, that’s who, and until Season 6 rolls around, Van Houten’s hint is enough for this obsessive fan to start wondering what major trouble Melisandre is going to get herself into come next year. Is Van Houten hinting that Melisandre will resurrect Jon Snow? I don’t know, but that would certainly be spectacular, and proponents of the idea are welcome to use her words to back up their arguments.

Apart from all the conspiracy talk, Van Houten also discussed how she deals with fans who haven’t taken kindly to Melisandre’s predilection for child-burning and brother-killing.

What’s great to do is when someone is mean – and there’s ugly stuff on the internet sometimes – I tend to not go into it that much, but sometimes I like to threaten them with a shadow baby. It always works.

Did we mention that we find Van Houten to be delightful? I feel like we should.
