Season 6 Rumor: Production Heading to Macedonia?
The Game of Thrones production may be adding another country stamp to its passports. A report by the Express suggests that the production is looking at locations in Macedonia to film Season 6.
According to the article, local outlet Народен Глас is reporting that the production made scouting visits to the country, with an eye on specific regions.
[the] city of Prilep, the city of Ohrid by Lake Ohrid and the central-eastern region of Krivolak which houses the country’s largest military base and has been used for NATO training exercises. Ohrid has been described as large and has lots of old villages situated in a mountainous forested location. While Pilep and Ohrid are most picturesque areas, Kirvolak is more barren and mountainous.
Kirvolak sounds a lot like the areas of eastern Spain that we reported the production was looking at, and settled on a couple of weeks ago. It’s doubtful that the show needs multiple mountainous regions for their shots. Ohird, on the other hand, doesn’t sound much like anything we’ve seen them scout in Spain—or anywhere else for that matter. The Express is also reporting that the production might be planning to film at Markovi Kuli Towers, which they claim was the backdrop to some of Season 5’s finale.
However, that information is a little suspect, since it doesn’t jive with what we know of filming locations used by the production for Season 5. Next door neighbor Greece was considered for Dorne, but the government said no. As far as we understand it, filming was in Ireland, Croatia and Spain, not Macedonia.
Moreover, there’s a big red flag in the report that makes the entire thing entire thing sound fishy. According to the local outlet, “filming on this stage of the production is due to start in March or April next year.” That’s not only completely outside the time frame for filming Season 6, it’s not even within the expected time frame for filming Season 7. Season 6 filming starts next month (July) and runs through December. March is when the production goes into promotional overdrive for the new season, and April is when it debuts, while Benioff and Weiss scramble to outline and write the scripts for the next one. So any report that says filming would take place during that time frame is either badly mistranslated or flat out wrong.
We’re putting this story in the “doubtful” pile.
