Pedro Pascal to appear in a Netflix series about drug lord Pablo Escobar

Since bowing out of the role of Oberyn “The Red Viper” Martell on Game of Thrones in the most dramatic way possible, Pedro Pascal has appeared steadily on TV, plus turning up unexpectedly alongside Heidi Klum in a recent music video for a Sia song. He’s got a lot more work lined up, too, including a starring role in Netflix’s upcoming Narcos, a ten-episode series about the hunt for notorious Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar.

Okay, so the teaser doesn’t give much away, but points for putting a narcotics-themed spin on a lyric first popularized by Ethel Merman.

Anyway, Pascal will play a Mexican DEA agent named Javier Peña, a real-life figure who played a role in taking down Escobar and his Medellín Cartel in the ’80s and ’90s. Gone Girl’s Boyd Holbrook will star as another agent who worked with Peña during his investigation. Elysium’s Wagner Moura will play Escobar himself.

Escobar’s life has been memorialized on TV and film before, most recently in Escobar: Paradise Lost, which was seemingly less about Escobar’s life and crime and more about why Josh Hutcherson should be afraid of him. Hopefully, Narcos will go a little deeper into the story. With Pascal at a lead role, Narcos could make a worthy addition to Netflix’s growing stable of quality original series. The show will be available to stream on August 28.
