Game of Thrones throws its support behind gay marriage with little chibi Renly
Yesterday, nearly 46 years to the day after the Stonewall riots kicked off the modern gay rights movement, the United States Supreme Court handed down a landmark decision granting gay people the right to marry no matter where in the country they lived, displacing the state-by-state system formerly in place. The ramifications of that decision will doubtlessly be debated for a long time to come, but Game of Thrones wasted no time in voicing its support for the development by posting this message to its official Facebook page: “Be pround. #SCOTUSMarriage.” Plus this:
Daw.
The little Renly Baratheon doll is one of the Game of Thrones vinyl figures manufactured by Funko, of which there are many more (although none of Loras, obviously). The debate over how the show has treated its homosexual characters has ebbed and flowed over the years. On the one hand, Game of Thrones caught some heat for diminishing the role of Loras Tyrell, its most prominent gay character, during its most recent season. On the other hand, the show has been more frank about the sexual orientations of characters like Loras and Renly than the books have. In any case, it’s good to see that the producers acted quickly to support the new decision.
