For the first time, Game of Thrones picks up Saturn Awards

The Saturn Awards, the ceremony put on by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films to honor the best in the genre, was held for the 41st time late last week in Burbank, California. The full list of nominees can be found here—winners include the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy (Best Comic Book-to-Film Release), The LEGO Movie (Best Animated Film Release—take that, the Oscars), and The Walking Dead (Best Syndicated/Cable Television Series). As it has been since the 2012 ceremony, Game of Thrones was nominated for a number of awards. Previously, however, the show had never won any. This time it did.

Maisie Williams and Rory McCann - Arya and the Hound (Game of Thrones Season 4)

Game of Thrones was nominated for three awards: Best Limited Run Television Series, Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series for Emilia Clarke, and Best Performance by a Younger Actor in a Television Series for Maisie Williams. These awards were for the show’s fourth season.

First off, the show won Best Limited Run Television Series, a nice feather in the show’s cap. It should be noted, however, that the category of Best Limited Run Television Series didn’t exist last year. A cynical person might say the award was invented so Game of Thrones wouldn’t have to compete with The Walking Dead, which last year beat out Game of Thrones in the more general Best Television Presentation category. Good thing we’re not cynical.

Emilia Clarke lost out on the Best Supporting Actress Award to Melissa McBride on The Walking Dead, but Maisie Williams won the award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor, meaning the voters must have as disturbed as everybody else by the way she abandoned the Hound to die on that hillside. Anyway, congratulations to the show of its first Saturn Awards wins.
