Game of Thrones at the Emmys: Fashion Rundown

Last night was a huge evening for Game of Thrones, both in terms of breaking the record for single wins in a year and in tying the all-time record for Emmys won over the lifetime of a show. (The current record holders, The West Wing and Hill Street Blues have 26 each. Game of Thrones has 26 as of last night and at least two more seasons to go.)

But though the numbers are impressive, let’s get to what we really care about—the celebrities! What did the stars wear? Who attended? And who was mysteriously absent?

After a few disastrous red carpet turns, Giles Deacon has finally learned how to dress his girlfriend. Gwen Christie looked fantastic last night.This was my favorite of all the outfits worn by the cast to the red carpet.

This was Lena Headey’s first public appearance since giving birth over the summer. I love that her dress is flattering yet looks pretty confortable.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, rocking the James Bond tux look.

I commend Sophie Turner for her continuing to experiment with pants on the red carpet, but the result here is that she feels slightly underdressed for the occation, and the pant hems are a scosh long. (Also, leave the goth lipstick for Dark Sansa, ‘kay?)

Maisie wore a dress made from a terrycloth bathrobe and shoes that look like they came out of a child’s dress-up bin.

But though I am not feeling the outfit, I love the penguin clutch/date.

So did Dinklage, apparently.

Speaking of Dinklage, he was looking wonderfully dapper on the red carpet. Also, we learned he is taking a cue from Kit Harington when it comes to hairstyles.

Yup! He’s sporting a man bun!

Speaking of Kit Harington, we should take this moment to note his absence with a majorly raised eyebrow. One of the hallmarks of dead characters on the show is that they do as many red carpet appearances on behalf of their final season as possible, partly because its their last chance to ride the publicity wave the show provides. Now, one might not be surprised that an established actor like Dillane wouldn’t bother with that. But Harington’s career was made by the show. So far his attempts to branch out have ran the gamut from middling (Testament of Youth) to total disasters (Pompeii). If he were really off the show, he would have been front and center on the red carpet last night, not to mention front and center in the photos and camera shots for those “Mother’s Mercy” wins, since his death was the capper on that episode. He would be showing off newly shorn locks, and a shaved baby face to show his range of looks to industry insiders while rubbing elbows and posing with friends.

Instead, he’s nowhere to be seen. Perhaps that’s because if he did show up, everyone would ask why he hasn’t cut his hair yet. Or perhaps because he’s busy filming a huge battle scene in Saintfield for Season 6. Emilia Clarke wasn’t around either, and that was because she’s in Navarra filming Season 6. We report, you decide.

Maybe someone should ask Carice if she knows where he is…

Benioff and Weiss didn’t bother to walk the carpet, leaving Amanda Peet to go it alone.

I’m just saying, if she were looking for company she could have joined these guys, who were hamming it up on the carpet. Squad goals, indeed.

Personally, I thought that Game of Thrones was going to be shut out of the awards by Mad Men, and us GoT junkies would just have to make do with Jane Lynch not impersonating the Shame Nun very well.

But then Benioff and Weiss won for Outstanding Writing for the Season 5 finale.

And Nutter for directing it.

This marked Dinkalge’s second Emmy for the role. Let’s hope it heralds a few more too. (Unfortunately, Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke lost the Best Support Actress award to Uzo Aduba, but two nominees in the same category for the same show do have a tendency to cancel each other out, so…)
