Did A Song of Ice and Fire make Amazon’s Top 100 Sci-Fi & Fantasy Books List?
The Amazon Books editors recently released their list of the 100 sci-fi and fantasy books everyone should read in their lifetime. Criteria for books making the cut included character creation, world building, and storytelling style.
Given those standards, it’s not surprising that the vast universe George R.R. Martin created has landed A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book I) a spot on the list.
Other entries consist of timeless classics such as The Hobbit, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and A Wrinkle in Time (Time Quintet). Newer works that made the cut are The Hunger Games (Book I), Cloud Atlas: A Novel, and The Martian.
“We wanted to choose books that had been life-changers to readers,” Amazon editor Adrian Liang told CNN. “The best books realign your thinking about your world, yourself and the world. A lot of themes stay the same because they’re timeless,” Liang said.
Curious about the differences between the fantasy and sci-fi genres? Liang breaks it down.
“Generally in fantasy, the themes are coming of age, personal strengths, how to deal with power you have and making the right choices. In science fiction, it’s how you interact with society and tear it down or build it up again,” Liang explains.
If you’re a Game of Thrones fan but haven’t picked up the books, now’s your chance to catch up before The Winds of Winter is published.
