Live stream: Game of Thrones Emmy nominations announced

The Emmy nominations will be announced this morning at 10:30 am CST. Watch them get announced live here.

When Game of Thrones debuted in 2011, we were blown away that it was nominated in multiple categories, let alone that it won anything, considering the prejudices against genre movies and shows. Then, after that first year, the show was confined to winning only “Creative Arts” Emmys that were given out on a different night. That seemed to confirm that the bias was still there.

But after last year’s incredible blowout, the Emmys are now something to watch. In 2015, Game of Thrones received a whopping 24 nominations. It won 12, the highest number of Emmys any show has won in a single year. (The West Wing had previously held the record with a measly nine.) That brings the show’s total Emmy haul to 26, which ties it with Hill Street Blues and The West Wing. Was it a fluke? Was it something that was based on the Emmys changing their rules so that a huge influx of younger voters were eligible for the first time last year? Most importantly: will it happen again this year?

The first step, of course, is to secure the nominations. (Here’s what episodes the show has put forward for consideration.) That’s why we’ll be posting the live stream for the Emmy broadcast right here on WiCnet. The nomination show begins at 11:30am EST (that’s 8:30am on the West Coast) when presenters Anthony Anderson (Black-ish) and Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls) will be announcing the nominees for the major categories for the 68th Emmy Awards. The Emmy Awards themselves air on Sunday, September 18, 2016 on ABC.

A reminder: at this point Game of Thrones only needs *one* win in any category, anywhere, to become the all-time record holder. Considering that the show generally does very well in the technical categories at the Creative Arts Emmys the week before, it would be very odd if the Emmys did not see fit to award them something on the main show in order to recognize this. Still, there is the outside chance that voters do not even nominate the show this year, in order to assure it does not get the chance to surpass Hill Street Blues or The West Wing—or at least, not until it’s final year. Such a move would be a shame, though, and we sincerely hope that’s not what we’re in for today.

UPDATE: Okay, well, the only pertinent award they announced in the live stream was the one for Best Drama Series, in which Game of Thrones received a nomination. The rest can be found on the Emmys website.
