Rhaegal and Viserion

Game of Thrones

After two seasons spent cooped up in a dungeon beneath Meereen, Rhaegal and Viserion are free, flying with their mother and older brother to Westeros. So far, the dragons have met very little opposition from external forces. And when things have gotten hairy, Drogon has generally taken point. Rhaegal and Viserion have stayed out of the fray, or at best provided him with air support. But now they’re old enough for Dany to take them into battle, and that could mean trouble.

Personally, I don’t see both of these guys living through Season 7. We’re getting to a point in the narrative when the showrunners need to raise the stakes, and killing off one of these beautiful creatures, both of whom have been with us since the end of Season 1, would accomplish that. The show has been killing off the direwolves at an alarming rate. The dragons could be next.

And it’s not like there won’t be opportunities for them to run into danger. True, dragons are formidable fighting machines, but they’re still mortal. And recall: Essos hadn’t seen dragons for hundreds of years before Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion burned the Masters’ fleet in “Battle of the Bastards.” But they were alive and well in Westeros only a handful of generations back. For all we know, Cersei has some infrastructure available to her in King’s Landing that can help neutralize them.

And then there’s Euron Greyjoy. In the books, Euron has a magical horn that can purportedly control dragons. It hasn’t turned up on the show yet, but if he has it, he could make all sorts of problems.

And there’s always the possibility that, as intelligent beasts, Rhaegal and Viserion are still bitter that Daenerys locked them up during her stay in Meereen. Might one of both of them act up to the point where Daenerys needs to put them down? I don’t know how dragons react to long periods of captivity. Neither does anyone on the show, and that ignorance could be deadly.

Chance both Rhaegal and Viserion survive: 25%.
