In some ways, it’s shocking that Grey Worm has lived this long. He first joined up with Daenerys and company in Season 3, when his Unsullied colleagues nominated him as their leader. Since then, he’s helped her take Yunkai, snuck into Meereen to raise the slaves, defended her regime against the Sons of the Harpy, and battled the Masters during the Battle of Meereen. And now he’s heading to Westeros to face a new array of enemies. He’s survived so far, but can the streak last?

Maybe. Grey Worm is a talented and disciplined warrior, but he’ll face threats in Westeros he hasn’t faced in Essos. For one thing, the Unsullied aren’t used to fighting armored knights of the kind Cersei is likely to send against Daenerys. Nor are they any good at fighting on water, which could be a problem if Euron attacks Daenerys’ fleet at sea.

On top of that, killing Grey Worm would lend some emotional punch to this new leg of Daenerys’ journey. On Game of Thrones, any character can die at any moment, and as we head into the endgame, that’s more true than it’s ever been. We’ve all gotten to like Grey Worm, and the producers could raise the stakes by killing him. (If they wanted to really twist the knife, they would kill either Missandei or Grey Worm but let the other live on.) And it’s not like having Grey Worm fall in battle would be a cheat—the Unsullied are the best fighting force in the world, but they’re not invincible, and there’s a lot of fighting to be done.

But on the other hand, they are the best fighting force in the world. And if Daenerys is smart, she’ll avoid having them do battle in close quarters in an urban environment, as Grey Worm and his phalanx did in Season 5’s “Sons of the Harpy.” Grey Worm may be in harm’s way, but it’s too early to count him out.
