Wyman Manderly

Wyman Manderly

Let Wyman Manderly stand in for some of the new Northern lords we met in Game of Thrones Season 6, including Lord Robett Glover (aka the guy who refused to help Sansa and Jon when they stopped by his holdfast in “The Broken Man”) and Lord Cley Cerwyn (aka the guy who wanted to pack up and go home in “The Winds of Winter”). None of these men helped Jon defeat Ramsay, but after little Lyanna Mormont publicly shamed the lot of them, Wyman was the first to pledge his sword to the new King in the North. Of these three, he’s the most prominent in the novels, so we’re betting he’ll be a part of Season 7.

Granted, Lord Wyman is very different on the show than on the page. In A Dance with Dragons, he goes undercover at Winterfell to undo the Bolton’s rule from within. On screen, he stays far afield of the fighting until after the Boltons are defeated. Still, his apology seemed sincere. We can see him joining Jon Snow’s new cabinet, along with Sansa, Lyanna, Davos, and maybe Littlefinger.

And what sorts of things will Jon Snow’s cabinet discuss? White Walkers: where are they, how are they, and how soon are they planning to kill everyone? In Season 7, Jon will dedicate himself to fighting the menace beyond the Wall, and that puts him and all of his allies in danger. And unlike Sansa, Jon himself, and even Lyanna Mormont, Wyman Manderly doesn’t have much in the way of plot armor. We don’t know him or care about him. If the writers are looking for someone to bump off as the White Walkers begin their assault on mankind, he’s likely at the top of the list.

At the same time, because Wyman is basically a blank slate, we can’t be sure of anything. Who know? Maybe he’ll outlive Jon’s other lieutenants and be a hero of the climatic Season 8 battle between the living and the dead.

Chance of survival: 40%
