The 30 most heartwarming moments on Game of Thrones
17. Podrick proves his loyalty to Tyrion (“Breaker of Chains”)
KATIE: In a world where few can be trusted, Podrick Payne stands alone as the most well-intentioned man in Westeros. Throughout his squireship, Podrick showed nothing but dedication to Tyrion, and when his master was imprisoned for killing King Joffrey, Pod refused to speak against him, even though that could have led to his death. (Or at least his imprisonment, torture, or exile, depending on who selected the punishment.)
Unlike the savvy and self-interested Bronn, Pod doesn’t have the measure of the people he’s up against should he remain loyal to Tyrion. After all, Tyrion is on trial for regicide, and Cersei is nothing if not tenacious when getting revenge on behalf of her children. Tyrion is very much alone at this point in the story, until Pod proves himself a true friend.
Podrick exemplifies a decency that is largely unfamiliar to Tyrion, and indeed to Game of Thrones in general. Tyrion is used to relationships defined by bargains and bets—’I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine.’ But Podrick’s friendship comes without strings—it was enough that Tyrion treated him with respect. Good faith merits good fortune, so we can hope that Pod reaps the goodness that he sows in the end.
