Video: Ed Sheeran appears on Game of Thrones

When we heard that Ed Sheeran would be appearing on Game of Thrones, we gave the choice the side-eye. The show has been pretty good about keeping celebrity cameos inconspicuous, but Sheeran was an odd choice. How could a star as big as him possibly fly under the radar without disrupting the story?

Well, the first episode of season 7 is here, and Sheeran has already popped up, playing a Lannister soldier with a nice set of pipes. Watch his cameo below.

The first thing A Song of Ice and Fire fans will notice is that he’s singing “Hands of Gold,” a song written by Symon Silvertongue about Tyrion Lannister’s affair with Shae. In the books, Tyrion had Symon murdered lest he tell tales. On the show, he doesn’t exist, at least so far as we know, and he certainly didn’t know anything about Tyrion. So this song is more like an Easter Egg for book fans.

And I’m happy to have it. Sheeran did a nice interpretation, all things considered. And he didn’t overpower the scenes. Consider it a cameo well done.

There’s more to this scene that the above video — after this bit, Arya sits down with the Lannister soldiers and chats with them about their homes. They seem like a nice lot, so let’s hope they don’t all turn up dead in the night by the end of Episode 2.
